Activities

The variety of activities and outdoor life that you will find in and around Vikbolandet makes it easy for you to find something that suits you. Fishing, golfing, island hopping, eating out, pubs, visiting the ostrich farm, swimming, picking mushrooms and berries, barbecues, relaxing and enjoying nature, sailing, jogging, riding, shooting clay pigeons, joining us at the beekeeping, elk safaris, four-wheel drive vehicles and much, much more.

The proximity to Kolmården’s Wildlife Park via the ferry over the Bråviken, gives almost unlimited possibilities for both children and adults of all age groups.

Vikbolandet – Orientation by Nature
When the residents of Vikbolandet talk about tourism we think: what is so special about us? Most people almost immediatley say Kolmården’s Wildlife Park and our beautiful archipelago! And yes, Kolmården with it’s special setup is a world class wildlife park and our unique archipelago leaves unforgettable memories.

Kolmården’s Wildlife Park has a carefully assembled environment for its animals with adjusted enclosures to be as close to the real thing as possible. Together with the walled arrangements for the public and especially the children, it is just SO good! Kolmården’s Wildlife Park does not merely measure up to the public’s expectaions, it outdoes them, foremost for our children!! A visit to Kolmården is a must especially for the family with children. You will reach the park with the ferry over the Bråviken in less than 30 minutes from our cottage.

An old country saying is “It is hard to become a prophet in your home town”, with the meaning that it is hard to be popular in the area you are from.
Kolmården’s Wildlife park is the exception that proves the rule, Kolmården IS a prophet in its own home town and in all of northern Europe!

Kolmården’s Wildlife Park – a giant animal, nature, game and adventure park for children!
On the Sea
St. Anna’s archipelago is widely known even outside of Swedish borders. And it is very special to be able to tack freely between hundreds, perhaps even thousands, of islands and skerries. Nobody quite knows how many islands there are in the whole of the archipelago, but according to hearsay, in the waters north of Gränsö, there is one island for each day of the year! I have not counted myself but there is surely a lot of them...

I personally think that the archipelago is best experienced actually far out in the archipelago and quite far away from land, when weather permits. The cottage renters may rent a boat from us and go out and discover the archipelago for themselves, or hire others for a professional tour. During summer the archipelago route goes every day from Arkösund and from here you can go to Arkö, Aspöja, Lammskär, Kallsö, Tyreslöt and Harstena among other places. Simply, everything is possible you only need to ask!

The feeling of freedom is great when, on a summer day, you land on an islet in the outer skerries to relax for a little sunshine and swimming! When one enters the same snow covered islet six months later in January, the feeling is even greater. The contrast is huge and the seasons change the archipelago together with the conditions drastically for the residents.
Summer or winter, extremely different but totally fantastic!

The archipelago of Östergötland, freedom typified! An absolutely unique natural environment that is a must to experience.
Much for Many – Something for Everybody
I think that I read the expression in a tourist leaflet a couple of years ago. "Vikbolandet –Much for many, something for everybody", and I would not be able to write it better myself. Possibly would I complement it with "Close to you", because of the different nature, culture and attractions within reasonable distance.

In Norrköping, you will find everything from cinemas and theatre, to restaurants and trams. In the medieval city of Söderköping you will find the old alleys in the centre of town and be able to sample the small city charm. In Vikbolandet, you will see all the old churches, the oldest one in Östra Stenby built already in the 12th century. Among all the castles Mauritsberg at Bråviken’s southern bank is well worth a visit.

Vikbolandet’s strategic location on the east coast means that many defensive ramparts can be seen, new as well as old. Among the older ones Stegeborg’s fortress should be mentioned, it was built to defend the prevailing capital Söderköping. Jämjö Skans outside of Östra Husby and a similar but even older one at Skenäs, testifies to the military struggles of the past..

Todays defence lines are many at Vikbolandet but not as distingusihable and many are blasted into rocky shelters in the inland but also in the archipelago.

An eventful region, with Kolmården’s Wildlife park and St. Anna’s Archipelago at the Centre!
Sport & Nature
For the interested, at Arkösund there is everything from sailing to golfing in Skamby in the middle of Vikbolandet. In Norrköping you can find a couple of the biggest go-cart tracks found anywhere and in Häradshammar a visit to an ostrich farm perhaps will have the children wondering – are we really in Sweden on holiday?

You will find several riding schools and Vikbolandet’s Ryttarförening have activities every day. For you who rents a cottage with us, there are opportunities to ride here and also to bring your own horse during your stay. There are excellent hiking and bicycle trails and in the wood there is during certain years a lot of mushrooms and berries.

During winter the skiing in Yxbacken is very attractive, Pernilla Wiberg’s home slope and there are possibilities to go long distance skating in the archipelago. The fishing with casting rod is free along the coast of Östergötland and hunting is offered at several places upon request. Especially the seabird hunt, together with housing and guiding, is a really nice combination of excitment, nature experience and relaxation.

For those who wish to experience the big city for a day, Stockholm is only two hours away via the free ferry that connects Vikbolandet with Kolmårdslandet.

Perhaps a new experience, visit the ostrich farm with its own farm shop or order a guided tour in our deer enclosure.
A little bit of history about the district
Vikbolandet, the landmass which is blasted in between the Baltic Sea’s two largest armlets (Bråviken & Slätbaken) originally contained of Lösings, Björkekind, & Östkinds Härader. These include at Vikbolandet no more then 14 parishes, (from west to the east) Styrsta, Dagsberg, Tingsta, Tåby, Furingstad, Konungsund, (Östra) Stenby, Kuddby, Å, Östra Ny, Östra Husby, Häradshammar, Rönö and Jonsberg.

The neighborhood was, in relation to the surroundings, rich with farmable land and surrounding waters made it easier for transportation. Söderköping was for a long time the most important trade centre on the east coast and there was woodland in close range along the coast lines. Futhermore, were the farmers given government forests by Queen Kristina in among other places Kolmården, an application right that comes with the farms still today and with joint ownership (tax ability) in the province.
We have joint ownership in Östkind’s District Community Land and administer solely forest property in Kolmården and at the north and east of Vikbolandet.

Heritage from the past that still can be seen are the castles and stately homes that were built and many of them are well preserved. Ravnäs, Ållonö, Rotenberg, Stensö, Mauritsberg, Broxvik, Lönö (where Sarah Leander lived), Jonsberg, Gottenvik, and the castle at Mem to mention just a few.
Some of them are more or less open to the public for example Mauritsberg’s Castle and Mem’s Castle that are well worth a visit.
